How Burglars Choose The Homes They Will Target

September 30th, 2019

Every year, thousands upon thousands of homes are broken into. Break ins can occur at practically any time of day or night, and while most assume that they’ll be targeted during the nighttime hours the odds are that you’ll be robbed when you aren’t even there.

While it’s easy to imagine them as shifty, impulsive people, criminals aren’t quite that random. They don’t just pick a home to break into without thinking about it first, and they usually spend a considerable amount of time determining just which homes will be the target of their crimes.

But how do they do so? Burglars will get an idea of everything, from what time you’re home to where the easiest entry point is to what kind of security systems are in place. They spend a good amount of time planning and preparing before they choose a home to target. There are several indicators and clues they use to let them know when and which homes to target. Let’s take a look at some of them.

Silent Days

Did you know that most robberies in the US happen between 10am and 3pm, not overnight? The reason is simple – those are the hours when most people are gone to work or school. Thieves don’t want to risk you waking up from a sleep while they do their dirty work. So, if they case your house and see that your home is empty and silent throughout the days, they’ll be more likely to target it then. Security cameras can help stop this from happening, preventing them from criminal activity.

Piling Up Mail

If you’re going on vacation, consider forwarding mail or having a neighbor pick up your mail. Otherwise, thieves will spot mailboxes piling up with mail and assume that you’re an easy target and will plan to rob your home as soon as they possibly can.

Easy Access

Do you keep all of your doors and windows unlocked – especially the ones out of view of the streets? If not, you may be inviting criminal activity. Keep all entry points locked and consider adding things like burglar alarms and cameras to monitor entry points more effectively.

No Security

Similarly, burglars know how to spot the presence of a security system. If your home doesn’t have alarms, cameras, and other similar implements then you’re basically telling them that you’re an easy target. Make sure to invest in a good security system to help ensure that your Akron property is fully protected from criminals.

The Bottom Line

The bottom line here is simple – if you take some time to make sure that you’re not giving burglars a green light to victimize you, you’ll be much less likely to find yourself burglarized.
